Hardrock Tunnel Boring Machines

This book describes the basic principles of tunnel engineering, including drilling, tunnelling, removal and disposal of excavated material and protection measures. The book discusses techniques for classification of rocks, technical details of the machinery and legal aspects. Numerous examples illustrate the state of the art, applications and potential problems.

The technical development of mechanical excavation is progressing rapidly, with an associated increase in knowledge year after year.

The first edition of this book was published in German several years ago. In response to strong interest the book has already been translated into Chinese and Korean and is now also available in English.

The book is aimed at experienced tunnel engineers as well as interested newcomers to the subject. The four authors work in different areas of tunnel engineering:

Bernhard Maidl was appointed as a Professor in the Department for Construction Technology, Tunnel Engineering and Construction Management at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 1974. In 1979 he established Maidl and Maidl Consulting Engineers in Bochum, who are involved in numerous large and challenging tunnel projects in Germany and abroad.

Dr. Martin Herrenknecht is the company founder and Chief Executive Officer of Herrenknecht AG, a global market leader for shield tunnelling machinery.

Leonhard Schmid is a tunnel design engineer and runs a firm of consulting engineers in Switzerland.

Willy Ritz was Director of a tunnel engineering company in Switzerland and has extensive practical experience.
