Both an interiors book and a wider view of Postmodernism, Terry Farrell "Interiors and the Legacy of Postmodernism" reviews the movement not as a style but as part of an all-encompassing cultural era, as a phenomenon of an age that rediscovered holistic connectivity and the broadening of all viewpoints.

Using the interiors as a starting point and inspired by Alberti’s observation that ‘The city is like some large house, and the house in turn is like some small city’, Farrell shows that connectivity can expand though a continuum from the smallest internal work to urbanism and the city itself. The book deals not only with continuums of scale but also those of time, of past and changing uses, differing particularities of context and their associated history, and the idea that nothing is ever really ‘finished’. Three types of interiors are covered – homes, museums and workplace – these projects range over three decades to show both continuity and legacy in Farrell’s work.

About the author:
Sir Terry Farrell CBE graduated from the school of architecture at Newcastle in 1961. He went on to graduate with a masters in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania before returning to London.

Terry founded his practice in 1965 and has continued it in his name since 1980. Completed buildings in the UK include MI6, Embankment Place, the new Home Office and The Deep in Hull. In East Asia, large scale infrastructure projects including Incheon Airport in Korea and Beijing and Guangzhou high speed rail stations in China. KK100 in Shenzen is the tallest tower ever built by a British architect and the West Kowloon masterplan is the largest air rights development of it’s kind in the world. His masterplanning work includes the Quayside in Newcastle, Brindley Place in Birmingham as well as Greenwich Peninsula and Earls Court in London.

Terry is currently visiting professor at the Bartlett, UCL and has taught at Cambridge University, the Architectural Association and University of Pennsylvania. He was an English Heritage commissioner and has advised a number of city governments on strategic affairs. He is the Mayor of London’s Design Advisor and the UK Governments Design Champion for the Thames Gateway. He has won many awards and written many books including Shaping London, The Patterns And FormsThat Make The Metropolis.
