Author: Richard Weston100 Ideas That Changed Architecture100 Ideas That Changed Architecture by Richard
Weston and published by Laurence King in October
2011 chronicles the most influential ideas that have
shaped architecture through out history.
Starting with the basic building 'components' of door, window, column and beam and the Classical orders, the book then goes on to explore historical movements such as the Picturesque and Beaux-Arts, innovative materials such as steel and reinforced concrete, technical innovations, such as the lift and electric lighting, through to modern movements such as Universal Design and Deconstruction. Ideas discussed explain how things that we see as standard, in modern-day architecture, came to be. For example: Why the invention of central heating allowed the 'Free Plan' to develop (because architects were liberated from the restraints of building rooms with fireplaces). As well explaining ideas in day-to-day domestic architecture, Richard Weston also examines ideas that shape landscapes, communities and public buildings and spaces: The Grid, Conservation and Sustainability are all also discussed. The book is arranged in a broadly chronological order and each idea is put into context with a variety of arresting images. 100 Ideas That Changed Architecture explores when each idea first evolved and the subsequent impact it has had up to the present day. 100 Ideas That Changed Fashion also available, plus 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design and 100 Ideas That Changed Film coming in 2012.
