Since the early 1990s the Russian construction industry has boomed on foot of increasing economic growth that one cannot today only speak of a building boom in metropolises like Moscow or St. Petersburg. The rapid architectural developments in Russian and Kazakh cities are meanwhile being followed with growing interest abroad as well. The present publication contains a selection of 50 projects of German architectural bureaus which have successfully risked taking the step in the direction of the East. It contains comprehensive essays on contemporary architecture in Russia and Kazakhstan and is supplemented by framework conditions and a report on architectural export in the practice.

About the author
Simone Voigt, born in 1968, studied business management and Russian in Berlin and Moscow. 1997-98 worked at the Moscow studio of German broadcaster ARD, since 2002 responsible for cultural programmes in the Russian regions at the Goethe Institute in Moscow.
