The Supports

Special attention has been paid in designing the contact points of the Bridge Pavilion and the riverbanks. The bridge structure of has three supports. The main support is located on a river isle to reduce the interference with the river flow. The isle is situated two thirds across the river from the right bank. The curved and hydrodynamic shape of the cone support located on the isle minimises any obstruction to the flow of the river in the event of flooding.

Likewise, the wind may blow and cross through the bridge without almost any interruption owing to the geometry of the diamond-shaped main body of the bridge. The central support bears nearly half of the structural load - a weight of nearly 7,000 tonnes. The foundations rest on 22 piles, ten of which are located on the central isle, four on the right bank and eight on the left bank.

On the right bank, a wedge of land supports the bridge so that the entrance is above the flood safety level. The design of the landscape has maintained the current topography in the surrounding area to highlight the natural morphology of the banks.

On the left bank, the ground is laid out in wide bands. One band is raised a little higher than the others to covers a small structure containing service systems for the bridge (main control room, store room, etc.) that need to be located on land. Closer to the bridge this band literally merges into the pavilion, bringing with it the grass from the roof within the exhibition space.
