The Architects
COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOSColl-Barreu Architects are dedicated to the investigation, development and construction of architectural projects. They lecture at the university and are interested in theoretical aspects of architecture, culture, art and communication. The firm has offices in Bilbao and Madrid. Their projects and theory have been published by several magazines and been on display in various locations, e.g. the Nuevos Ministerios Exhibition Center, the Conde Duque Civic Center in Madrid, the MACBA, the Congress Centre of Barcelona as well as in many Spanish Architects Associations Headquarters and showrooms of Bilbao. Bilboa is the first city to dedicate a monographic exhibition to Juan Coll-Barreu (2001). Coll-Barreu Architects have been the recipients of many prizes: the Architecture COAVN Prize, the international VETECO-ASAFAVE Prize and the Architecture FAD Prize, twice. They have been selected for the VII Spanish Young Architects Exhibition (1999-2001) organized by the Antonio Camuñas Foundation and the Spanish Young Architects Show 1982-2002. Juan Coll-Barreu was awarded the Honor Mention of the Antonio Camuñas Foundation, acknowledging the best project built by under-40 architects. Their buildings include The Data Processing Center in Bilbao, the Air Traffic Control Center in Madrid (which controls the Galileo satellite network), the Jaca Ice Arena for the first Olympic event in the Pyrenees and the Basque Health Department in Bilbao. The firm remains a leader in architectural theory and designs buildings for government and private clients in many locations and on many scales.
