Urban Concept

© Peter Bennetts
Strategically located at a major bend in the Yarra River, the project completes the vision for the rejuvenation of the river corridor established by the Southbank development 20 years earlier and offers a fulcrum into the newly expanding Docklands precinct to the north. In response to this urban context the triangular figure of the plenary building acknowledges three figurative axes - the colonial city, the developing city and the speculative city to come.

The triangular design of the Convention Centre gives the cityscape a new feature on the banks of the Yarra River. The distinctive 18 metre high glass façade gives passers-by a glimpse to activity within the centre and creates a foyer full of natural light, as well as offering views out across the Yarra River to the city beyond. In yet another innovative move, all delivery and logistic services are diverted underground and unload at the core of the building, eliminating any possibility of traffic or trucks around the perimeter.
