The library becomes an open protection building in which the cross-shaped old library is integrated in an astonishing manner. Concealed, but anticipated behind the semitransparent skin, the old building lies in the interior, its roof being transformed into an open reading area. From here, bridges lead to the open access library areas in the new part of the building.

While a women's library is installed on the first floor, a restaurant and exhibition areas are placed on the ground floor surrounding the old part. Within this clear zoning, the light atrium becomes an orientation room, which also carries out lighting and ventilation functions. The roof above it is perforated by skylights under which a white membrane softly spreads the incoming light. While the old library is integrated in a house-in-house-like manner, its existing cupola will be reconstructed as a new steel-glass-construction, rising above the new building as a cultural and historical symbol.
