Glass MaterialsTHIELE GLAS supplied the required roof-glazing units for the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town (South Africa)
The total order volume of special enamelled laminated safety glass TG-PROTECT for the roof of the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town amounts to 38.000 m². Cape Town’s Glass Pearl arose at the foot of the Table Mountain at the well known Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in a spacious designed park and offers up to 68.000 seats in its 45 meter high circular form. The roof construction has been erected by Pfeifer Rope and Lifting Systems GmbH. Thiele Glas produced and supplied the required special roof glass units. In the period from November 2008 until July 2009 all these units have been produced in Germany and have been forwarded to South Africa. With an investment of 285 million € the old, 18.000 seats, Green Point Stadium has been completely replaced by a complete new Green Point Stadium. This as Cape Town is the host city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. -eye-view of the roof construction.
The segments supplied by THIELE GLAS are marked in red. The roof construction is a combination of a hanging roof with a radial binding-system. The arched roof has been executed in TG-PROTECT laminated glass. As the roof construction consists of several different segments, approximately 11.000 units were required to complete this construction. TG-PROTECT, consisting of 2 x 8 mm heat-strengthened glass with special enamelling, is used for this project. As the requirements in respect of visual and technical quality are on such an extraordinary high level, test sheets have been produced parallel and continuous during the entire lead-time in order to monitor the quality from start to finish. The TG-TVG sheets (heat-strengthened sheets) needed much higher values for bend- and tensile strength in order to fulfil the static requirements. Apart from that another challenge for the Thiele team was to develop an enamelled sheet which complies with the special demand of the light factors such as light-reflexion and transmission. sketch of one of the 72 segments The roof consists of 72 segments. Besides the large quantity of rectangular sheets there are also many trapezoid sheets and raked-side sheets integrated. On the inside of the roof a translucent membrane skin is mounted. The space between glass and membrane integrate technical applications such as the sound- and light system, provides shelter against rain and functions as an acoustic insulation. The silhouette of the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town is something special. Due to the use of state-of-the-art materials the flat, arching roof obtains its attractive appearance. An audience of 68.000 people find a sheltered seat below this roof. At the end of 2009 the sky above Cape Town will reflect in the roof of the new Green Point Stadium. 68.000 Fans find a seat in the Green Point Stadium.
