American Institute of Architects (AIA) conferred the
Institute Honor Awards for Architecture in 2007 on
Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects/Goldsmith Borgal & Company Limited Architects for the project:
Canada’s National Ballet School: Project Grand Jeté, Stage 1: The Jarvis Street Campus, Toronto, Ontario
“This is a new kind of civic place with seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces that enhanced the neighborhood…The building activates the street…Powerful and yet well balanced in its context…Works well in the environment and is an important thread to the community…Students feel the building has not only informed the community about their art form but enhanced their creativity.”
Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) is the only institute in North America to offer an integrated program of professional dance training, advanved level academic education and resident living.
Stage 1 realizes the school’s vision to create a student-centered training facility which supports its mandate to nurture mind, body, and soul and to balance innovation and tradition in the art form. It also participates in the revitalization of the North Jarvis precinct of downtown Toronto.
The new training centre for NBS creates a vertical campus of three transparent elements composed around a historic residence. The concept fuses architecture, dance, and movement within a series of stacked, horizontal platforms (stages) to bring the spectacle of dance to the city.
