Since its inception in 1936, SOM has undertaken a variety of commissions in the United States and in more than 50 countries throughout the world. SOM is renowned for successfully completing challenging and complex assignments within strict time frames and budget constraints.

In an unprecedented decision, The American Institute of Architects recognized SOM with the highest honor given to architectural firms, the 1996 Architecture Firm Award for distinguished architecture. SOM was the recipient of the first Architecture Firm Award in 1962 and is the only firm to win this award a second time. SOM's unyielding commitment to excellence results in the completion of visionary, functional and noteworthy buildings. Throughout its history, SOM has been recognized with more than 1300 awards for quality and innovation, of which over 250 have been received in the past 5 years.

SOM's highly diversified large and small scale projects include offices; banks; commercial, industrial and educational buildings; hotels; convention and exhibition centers; museums and performing arts facilities; hospitals and laboratories; airports, train stations and subways; and recreational, religious and residential facilities. Interior design is an integral part of SOM's practice, as is a broad range of urban planning projects, including redevelopment and reuse plans, impact assessments and transportation planning analyses.
