Transport and Traffic

Transport Interchange
The bus terminal is designed with the capacity for 92 parking spaces in order to adapt to the large percentage of chartered tour operated flights in Malaga. It is located at the basement level below the atrium space and communicated with departures and arrivals lounges by mechanical ramps and elevators. The transport interchange will be expanded in the future to incorporate a new station for the existing commuter train.

Roadway Access
The existing traffic access to the Malaga Airport takes place through a roundabout that connects the airport with the Malaga-Torremolinos highway. The new layout is based on two separate internal circulation loops that give access to the departures and arrivals kerbs, two new roundabouts, one located south of the terminal area and the other located north of the terminal area, and a central road that connects the terminal area with the airport services area through an 825 m tunnel.

The main access to the airport will be directly from the new south access (a highway currently on design stage) through a roundabout located south of the terminal area. The road traffic splits 275 m after the south roundabout in departures and arrivals. Both kerbs are located at different levels and have three pass through lanes and the necessary bus and taxi parking positions.

Traffic exiting the arrivals kerb, may merge with traffic exiting departures kerb, south of the terminal area, in a three lane and one way road that exits the airport to the south access highway.

The proposed solution includes a tunnel that will allow the buses to access and exit the bus station located on the basement level. The tunnel will also pass under the future apron expansion to connect with the new airport services area and in the future, with the planned new north access.
