Construction
Construction Estadio das Dunas will be constructed with all available resources from the state of Rio Grande do Norte; the selection of local materials was maximized in order to energize the local economy, showcase the local industry and promote it to the rest of the country. The stadium was also designed to add vibrancy to the city long after the World Cup by providing flexible spaces throughout the building that can be used for multiple functions, optimizing the effort and resources invested in the project. The undulating white form of the stadium embraces the marine environment of Natal. The upper bowl is sculpted by a canopy that rises up with the seating bowl to accentuate the upper bowl's rise and fall. The upper bowl is separated into 20 individual petals which functionally separate the seating bowl into intimate seating neighborhoods while providing a distinctive, sculptural form for the building. The petals obstruct direct sunlight from the spectators while allowing the main stands to catch the prevailing on-shore breezes and air movement into the seating bowl using polycarbonate louvers between each stadium petal. Each section is linked via a continuous surging concourse that rises to the west side to allow two levels of VIP facilities. This arrangement gives the stadium its distinctive, dramatic and asymmetric form, much like the sand dunes framing the backdrop of the park complex. Estadio das Dunas is designed to LEED standards, as recommended by FIFA. Its sustainable design measures, such as water and waste reduction and green operations, will help impart a behavioral. |
