Innovative solutions to prevent birds dying on glass facades
Every year more than 100 million birds die on the large glass fronts of office towers or the barriers of bridges and motorways.
The birds try to get to the world behind the glass and do not see the panes of glass as an obstacle – with fatal results.
LEARNING FROM NATURE
The spider’s web is the starting point for solving this problem.
With their webs the spiders use the fact that birds can see UV light. The webs reflect the UV light so that they are a visible barrier for the birds’ eyes – and the spiders have successfully protected their webs from destruction by the birds.
Two products are based on this concept: bird glass and bird marker.
1. Solution: Bird Glass
Based on the spider´s web effect an insulated glass is coated so that it can be perceived by the bird in the ultra violet spectrum. The coating is almost invisible to humans.
The glas is patented and has won many awards, e.g. the Environmental Innovation Award or the Progress Award of the animal rights organisation PeTA.
The Glass can be used in all windows and facades. It is advisable to plan for bird glass with new developments. It is of course also possible to exchange the glass later.
2. Solution: Bird Pen
With the Bird Marker an additional visible layer for birds’ eyes can be applied to the glass fronts. Bird Marker is only suitable for private residential property as it is applied manually.
• The additional layer must be applied to the outside of the glass after it has been thoroughly cleaned.
• The stripes can be removed at all times with commercial window cleaner.
• Bird Marker can be purchased from our shop.
3. Solution: Bird Film
The problem of bird collision is usually only appreciated when the facade is finished. Replacing the glass is not possible afterwards due to the high costs involved. Therefore, we provide film that can be applied retroactively. The film is however also visible to humans.
4. Solution: Bird Imprints e.g. for motorway noise barriers
Motorways, subway stations etc. often have screens and noise barriers. These barriers can be deadly for birds. Very good protection can be achieved by regularly adding additional imprints.
We provide advice and a range of effective bird control products.
5. Solution: raptor cries and warning call systems
These acoustic systems are based on the calls of predators and the cries of the victim’s fear. The speakers are installed on facades and emit cries from the top down.
The volume can be set so that the cries do not disturb residents, but still protect birds from collisions.
6. Solution: window decals
Window decals are often seen in the form of predators. The effect is limited, the habituation effect is high. Nevertheless, decals are often used due to their attractive price. Experience shows, that four predator silhouettes per square metre window achieve a relatively good effect.
