Smoke control systems and safe evacuation

In case of fire in a high-rise building smoke control and safe evacuation of people has highest priority. In order to prevent egress of smoke into the staircases or lift shafts the solution is to install a Positive Pressure System (PPS).

The technical and testing scenario for such a fire fighting system is described in the European Norm EN 12101-6.

The functioning of PPS is easily described: the components for a system are

• smoke detectors,
• a ventilator,
• a control panel and
• some actuators for air release.

In high-rise buildings the installation of a pressure differential system is nationally regulated and sometimes more complicated because air supply and air release are not easily solved.
