Our carpets are produced on the latest generation high-speed looms, which are fully electronic. We are involved in as many of the processes as possible -from blending and spinning the wool through to weaving and finishing. This provides us with the ultimate control over quality and consistency of material.
Axminster
The quality of an Axminster Carpet is measured by 4 different variants; number of rows per inch, pile height, pile weight and type of weft used. This enables us to tailor make the quality of the carpet to suit the installation and its traffic levels.
Rows Per Inch
To measure the density of the carpet, we sub-divide the carpet into inches, for very inch there can be anything from 42 tufts to 84 tufts per inch. We calculate this number by multiplying the ends (number of tufts running in the direction of the WEFT) by the rows (number of tufts running in the direction of the WARP). At Cambridge Weavers, our Axminster carpets always have 7 ends per inch, it’s the rows that change. The more rows per inch, the higher the quality - this will also determine which type of installation the carpet will be used for. Below are a list of varying densities and their typical end uses.
Pile Height
The pile height in an Axminster construction can be varied to effect the underfoot comfort and the pile weight of the carpet. Adjusting the pile height will ultimately have an impact on performance and cost, and should always be considered with the tuft density to gain the optimum performance from the carpet. Cambridge Weavers pile heights can range from 8.4 mm (e.g. guest rooms) down to 6.0 mm (e.g. public areas)
Pile Weight
The pile may constitute up to 50% of the cost of the carpet and therefore its selection and the amount used in the construction will have a significant effect on the price of any carpet. Pile weights are effected by the type of yarn used and the construction of the yarn, the most popular type of yarn used in Axminster is a blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon in a two fold yarn system.
Weft Material
High quality backing yarns are essential to produce a quality carpet, they ensure dimensional stability and secure pile anchorage. Our carpets today use polyester as the warp yarns and polypropylene as the weft, however we sometimes use natural materials such as jute for the weft when we need additional performance in fire tests.
Design and Colours
Our designs clearly demonstrate our understanding of colour and texture. Working with many top international designers, we specialise in interpreting their ideas into a creative solution.
Your floorscape should appeal to the senses. We can create a luxurious, elegant richness, with a subtle pattern, or maybe a bold, innovative design which energises its space.
Our tuft box contains a wide selection of colours - the use of natural wool gives us the opportunity to create an exciting variety of colour combinations.
