Inspired by a Chinese hat - the wooden roofing of the famous museum
Centre Pompidou-Metz, France
|
| With this issue's major focus on wood construction, this newsletter
introduces the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France with its extra-ordinary
wooden roofing. The Centre Pompidou-Metz, designed by the architects Shigeru
Ban and Jean de Gastines, shares the vocation of the original Centre
Pompidou: to present and help discover all forms of artistic expression,
to raise public awareness of the major works of the 20th and 21st
century, and to take part in Europe’s cultural landscape. |

| Inspired by a Chinese hat found in Paris by Shigeru Ban, the structure
of the roof receives its irregular geometry. The emblematic and highly innovative roof features curves and counter-curves over the entire building. Its structure is composed of a glue laminated timber, making it highly resistant and enabling uncommon lengths. |
|
The two-layered wooden mesh enables the roof to span approximately 40 metres, resting on only a few supporting parts. This structure is one of the largest and most complex of its kind built up to date. The Centre Pompidou-Metz totals 10.000 m². It was inaugruated this year. |

An up-to-date, full and formative offering of knowledge and information from the world of wood construction can be expected at the 15th International Wood Construction
Forum (IHF) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. On 2 December 2009 there will be the usual expert warm-up in the form of four pre-conference seminars at an opening session organized by the German Timber Industry Council on the subject of “Sustainability – Ecology – Certification.” The topics will subsequently receive in-depth treatment in the main sessions on the following two days of the core event on 3/4 December 2009.
|
In the light of climate change, energy efficiency and reduction of carbon emissions should be the order of the day in the construction industry. As the use of wood as a construction material can make a significant contribution to minimise energy requirements in new and existing buildings, the programme of the International Wood Construction Forum is highly meaningful in this respect, too.
The international team of organizers under the leadership of the Bern University of Applied Sciences, Biel, and Rosenheim University attracted speakers of national and international standing. Attendees can look forward to a wideranging and in-depth update of their knowledge from presentations grouped around seven topics.
Application Deadline: 27 November 2009
