International Design Competition
LAVA
awarded to design "The heart of Masdar" |

Masdar Plaza

As the world’s first zero carbon, zero waste city powered entirely by renewable energy sources, Masdar in the United Arab Emirates is a planned city located 17 kilometres from Abu Dhabi.
The city is scheduled to be completed by 2016. Then the Masdar
city centre will include a plaza, five-star hotel, long stay hotel, a
convention centre and entertainment complex and retail facilities. |
LAVA, the winning team of the international competition "The heart of Masdar", sees Masdar Plaza 'as "The Oasis of the Future": a
living, breathing, active, adaptive environment; stimulated by the social
interaction of people, and spotlighting the use and benefits of sustainable
technology.' Their project includes environmental and
engineering design concepts like solar powered 'sunflower' umbrellas that capture the sun's rays during the day, fold at night releasing the stored heat, and open again the next day.

Crown Resort Montafon "alpine grand hotel - revisited" |
| At the meeting of the competition jury judging the design of a
hotel on the southern edge of Gaschurn in the Montafon Valley in the Alps of Vorarlberg in July 2009, ATP Architects and Engineers was awarded first prize.
|
|
Object of the competition is a four star hotel to be built on the so-called "Edelweiss" site on the
Silvretta high alpine road between the municipalities of Gaschurn and
Partenen. The investors provide 17 million euros for the realization of
a hotel of international stature. It should be one of the largest hotels in the state of Vorarlberg, with around 130 rooms, a range of restaurants and bars, wellness facilities, conference rooms and a children's play area.

|
The concept of ATP Architects and Engineers refers to the "typology of the Alpine Grand Hotel". Materiality and scale are the determining
factors of the concept for the proposed complex. The hotel typology and
the urban situation mean that this is a landmark which can be seen from
a considerable distance and engages in a creative dialogue with the
traditional building patterns of the valley and the road. |
| The design is both logical and practical in the interests of the hotel operator and sensitive and sustainable in the interests of the location - particularly in its choice of materials. |
