An international ideas competition, open to architects and architecture students worldwide, was launched last February by the Foundation for Peace and Unification. The competition was for the conception of a peace park linking the two Diomede islands, situated in the middle of the Bering Strait, to unite the Eurasian and American continents through a pertinent architectural symbol.	1st prize Julian Restrepo Image: www.bering-competition.org
135 projects were submitted to the international jury. The team led by the Colombian architect Julian Restrepo was unanimously voted first prize by the jury for the project entitled "Diomede Archipelago". It proposes a series of islands made of recycled material dredged from the sea.
Despite their diversity, the submitted projects revealed the architectural profession’s growing consciousness of environmental issues.

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture OMA and Urbanus "Shenzhen Creative Center" wins Shenzhen Crystal Island competition
Shenzhen Crystal Island © OMA / Ole Scheeren	The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), in collaboration with Shenzhen-based architects Urbanus, has been awarded first prize in the design competition. A major new cultural center, transport hub, and public landmark emerges in the heart of the city of Shenzhen, southern China. The design, led by OMA partner Ole Scheeren, was selected from 32 entries by an international jury. At the heart of the winners' project is the "Shenzhen Eye", a symbolic "Space of Imagination".
The scheme builds on Shenzhen's newly acquired status of "City of Design", awarded by UNESCO in 2008, and proposes for the city's Crystal Island project the formation of "Shenzhen Creative Center": a focal point for the city's creative industries in front of Shenzhen's iconic city hall.
