European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF)
Europe needs more focus on renewable heat
In 2010, for the second consecutive year, the European solar thermal market is expected to shrink. The industry, gathered in Brussels for the General Assembly of European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF) in December 2010, agreed that some of the main markets were giving signs of recovery for 2011. |
Representatives from industry, association and research have discussed the short- and medium-term outlook for a market which has been particularly affected by the crisis in the building sector. |
| Robin Welling (TiSUN), who was elected new president by the members of the ESTIF at the assembly, declared shortly after his election, that ESTIF will intensify activities in order to put solar thermal and renewable heat at the top of the politcal energy agenda. |

The Masdar Institute is the first building of its kind to be powered entirely by renewable solar energy. Designed by Foster + Partners, it is devoted to researching sustainable technology and will be used as a pilot test bed for the sustainable technologies that will be explored for implementation in future Masdar City buildings. |
The Institute and its facilities use 54 percent less potable water, 51 percent less electricity compared to UAE standard buildings and are fully powered by solar energy. Around 30 percent of the campus’s energy will be covered by solar panels on the roof, with 75 percent of hot water also being heated by the sun. Additionally, the campus's complex architecture that combines modern and traditional Arabian architectural elements allows to regulate the heat within the campus area as with self-shading facades that cool the inside of the buildings.
