Senckenberg International Convention

Congress topic: Exhibit Nature & Explain Science
Dates: 6 and 7 June 2012
Venue: Senckenberg Natural History Museum, Frankfurt/Main, Germany

Project Senckenberg – The Natural History Museum of the Future

On the 6th and 7th June 2012 the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung will host an international convention on the topic "Exhibit Nature & Explain Science" in the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, Frankfurt/Main. What will the natural history museum of the future look like? Using international examples, architects, exhibition designers, curators, scientists, artists and journalists will present the trends and perspectives that are important for the Senckenberg Museum in planning its building extension in Frankfurt am Main.

Call for Proposals
Till the end of January the "Call for Proposals" is running: museum experts, exhibition designers, science journalists, media experts and architects are asked to submit a presentation dealing with the natural history museum of the future.

"Exhibit Nature & Explain Science" is the opening event in our “Project Senckenberg”, says Senckenberg’s Director General, Prof. Volker Mosbrugger, about this event. Senckenberg is planning to complete the extension to its Frankfurt natural history museum in time for its 200th anniversary in 2017. “In anticipation of this event we want to initiate an international dialogue between exhibition designers, architects and museum and media experts”, says Mosbrugger.

By now more than half of humanity lives in cities, a trend that is increasing rapidly. Such urbanisation distances us from nature. The natural fundamentals of life are no longer self-evident, but at the same time curiosity continues to grow.

Well-founded knowledge about nature is a prerequisite for society in learning how to evaluate dangers realistically and treat nature responsibly. “The natural history museum could be the place where our relationship with nature is cultivated,” is how Mosbrugger summarises his vision. Project Senckenberg is the ambitious plan which, along with preparing for the new Senckenberg Natural History Museum, will also introduce a wide-ranging debate about cultural behaviour in the contexts of nature.

With its broad experience and expertise in natural research, Senckenberg is the specialist in studying evolution, the function of animals and plants, habitats, the dynamics of the earth and climate. Senckenberg has set up a special website dedicated to the event “Exhibit Nature & Explain Science”: http://future.senckenberg.de
