Sustainability – the mission and future of the door industry
Date: 20-21 May 2010
Venue: Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Rosenheim, Germany

Legal requirements, standards and certificates, combined with the demand for
more user comfort, safety, security and energy efficiency require door
manufacturers to adopt new technologies and strategies. The Rosenheim Door
Conference supports companies in this task and provides information about recent
trends and the consequences of changes in national and European standards. In
addition to the Energy Conservation Regulation (EnEV), the Machinery Directive,
product standards and fire safety regulations, the industry requirements for
sustainability are also becoming more important: more and more frequently,
investors and designers require performance data of building components,
including doors and accessories. Speakers will include Hans-Dieter Hegner (BMVBS, Federal Ministry of Transport,
Building and Urban Development) and the President of the DIBt (German Institute
for Construction Technology), Gerhard Breitschaft, who will give a firsthand
account of the current legal position.
In the past, discussions about green buildings, houses of the future and
sustainability were more controversial and based on theories. But now the demand
for sustainability has become a very real fact of life in the construction
industry: Building owners, authorities, architects, investors and the housing
industry demand evidence and certificates from recognised bodies as proof of
energy efficiency and to secure the resale value of their properties.
Increasingly, these requirements are included in specifications for construction
contracts. The Rosenheim Door Conference 2010 will show manufacturers and
assemblers how the current requirements can be successfully implemented in their
companies. The focus will be on the practical implementation of providing
evidence and certificates for sustainability as well as information, and
conducting discussions about the development of technical standards. This
includes current trends for coping with the difficult market, the new product
standard and CE marking of internal doors and the extended rules for industrial
doors. Regarding fire safety, the question is how to deal intelligently with
approvals, application areas and the much discussed extrapolation rules in
European standards to achieve national and European documentary evidence that
holds up in the future and requires only the minimum amount of testing.
The ift speakers will cover the current status of standards and their
practical implementation. In addition, they will report directly from their
practical work in standards committees and at the Institute, particularly in
testing and research: a must for all those involved with the practical side of
the business.
Hans-Dieter Hegner (BMVBS, Berlin), Klaus-Dieter Wathling (Principal Building
Control Office, Berlin), Dirk von Locquenghien (Ministry for the Environment,
Baden-Württemberg), Gerhard Breitschaft (President, DIBt) and Prof. Christian
Niemöller (SMNG Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, Frankfurt) will explain
implementation from the perspective of the construction laws and what
requirements are likely to be expected in the future.
There is little doubt that, technically speaking, automatic doors are the
most demanding to produce, because they require an intelligent combination of
aspects of mechatronics, construction physics and design in order to offer users
optimal safety, efficiency and comfort. These special aspects will be covered by
a number of lectures from several different angles.
There will also be enough time to cover current developments and
opportunities in the marketplace. Martin Langen (B+L Marktdaten, Bonn) and
Christian Hehenberger (Institute for Marketing and Trend Analysis, Gutau) are
recognised experts in market data and analysis and will outline strategies for
coping with the economic crisis.
The varied range of topics and trends will be presented and discussed in the
following six conference tracks:
1. External pedestrian doorsets (product standards, replacement rules,
questions and answers regarding CE marking)
2. Internal doors (product standard EN 14351-2, environmental compatibility,
VOCs, market opportunities in Europe)
3. Industrial doors and automation (Machinery Directive, construction physics
requirements for automatic door systems, use of control technology, DIN EN
13849-1)
4. Fire safety (Fire Safety Standard DIN EN 16034, fields of application,
requirements and extrapolation rules of European standard requirements)
5. Hardware and security (market development, European standard for burglar
resistance and hardware)
6. Current topics and law (practical implications of the EnEV, comfort and
accessibility, dealing with hidden defects)
The congenial conference atmosphere, the ift Meeting Point, extensive
facilities for meetings and an entertaining social evening offer plenty of
opportunities for discussions with ift experts and speakers and networking with
friends and business acquaintances.
