ESD to design Kingdom Tower’s building systems

US-based, high performance building systems design firm Environmental Systems Design, Inc (ESD), has won the contract to design the building systems for the new Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The project is envisaged to comprise energy efficient building systems that are organized vertically in accordance with occupancy and configured with the highest equipment standards.

According to the agreement, ESD is to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering, with the firm’s technology services group who are responsible for delivering integrated consulting services for tele-data, audio/visual, security and acoustics.

Dubai-based Emaar Properties, developer of Dubai’s 828-metre-tall Burj Khalifa will provide development services for the project, while the design team is to be led by Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture. At more than 1,000 metres in height, the Kingdom Tower will be the world’s tallest building.

The centrepiece of Kingdom City, which will be a new urban development of more than 23 million square metres, will have a structure that will feature a luxury hotel, office space, serviced apartments, condominiums and an observation deck spanning approximately 530,000 square metres.

Saudi Arabia’s Binladin Group, one of the Kingdom’s biggest contractors, was awarded the $1.2 billion deal for the tower by Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), who is one of Kingdom Holding’s associate firms.
