Submission deadline: 31 December 2010
Winner announced: March 2010 at MIPIM

About the awards
The WAN AWARDS EFFECTIVENESS category is a major international competition, and complements the hugely successful six bi-monthly WAN 'Excellence in Design' series. There are six sub categories corresponding to those sectors: Education/Healthcare/Civic/Urban Design/Commercial/Residential.

Eligibility
The Effectiveness category encompasses all projects completed over 18months ago (completed on or before March 2009).

Judging criteria / Instructions for Upload Form:
The jury will judge entries on the information provided which should be backed up where possible by client data and statements. Ideally entries should either detail the specific item or provide an extract/quote from the brief and specific data of how your building has performed over time. The submissions should address the following key requirements:

MAIN TEXT: This should include between 250-1,250 words (and wherever possible be accompanied by some evidence) of how the building has proven to be effective against:

  • The original client brief / requirement

SUB TEXT: Up to 250 word statements on how the building has proven to be effective against the following criteria:

  • SOCIAL (how has the building impacted it's environment / community)
  • TECHNOLOGICAL (how the building typology has improved, what is new or different)
  • ECONOMIC (how has the building contributed to the local economy)
  • ENVIRONMENTAL (sustainability criteria)
  • PRODUCTIVITY (has the building increased, staff / user outputs)

Celebrating Architecture's Effectiveness
Competitions and awards have always been an important element of winning new work for architects, but increasingly and especially in light of the present economic cloud, a new element has grown in importance. Effectiveness.

It is given that a building must be delivered on spec, on time and on budget, but the success of the architect is more than delivery and it's not just about form or beauty. This new award will provide additional exposure for architects who have delivered that extra added value to their clients.

A building's true effectiveness is judged by many performance measurements sometimes many years after it has been completed. Has the design impacted on the core functionality and purpose of the building? For instance has a new building helped the school increase its academic ranking? Has an office refurb. increased productivity? Or has a new retail outlets design and configuration increased sales? But its more than this... a buildings effect can also be measured by how it has contributed to its local economy, has the building become a catalyst for further renewal and regeneration? How about the buildings sustainability performance? Or technological innovation, was a new technique trialled on the building and since been used elsewhere?

All these questions and more are being levelled at the buildings we create and the developments we contribute to but until now no-one has celebrated the schemes that have proven to have considered, balanced and delivered against these varied criteria.
