Electrolux Design Lab: 2010 Competition

The 2nd Space Age

Submission Deadline: 01 May 2010

Electrolux Design Lab 2010 invites global undergraduate and graduate industrial design students to create home appliances that consider shrinking domestic spaces. Your ideas will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050 when 74% (source: UN) of the world’s population are predicted to live in an urban environment.

Growing populations living in concentrated areas dictate a need for greater space efficiency. This year, special consideration will be given to designers that submit a design within the context of a range or suite of solutions/appliances. Your design ideas should address key consumer requirements; being green, adaptive to time and space, and allowing for individualization.

As global urbanization increases, the perceived value and potential use of space in domestic environments is explored –we’re entering the 2nd Space Age

  • Trend: By 2050 74% of global population will live in an urban environment.
  • Design: Small doesn’t mean cheap – it means smart, efficient and innovative.
  • Green: Using space more effectively reduces global impact.
  • Architecture is accommodating this trend with smart designs that integrate ‘green’ environments within what is commonly know as an ‘urban environment’ and the development of zero emission, self sustainable houses – this reinterpretation of urban dwelling provides a provocative view of the future.
  • The traditional prescription of space within homes being given to a room with a specific function is being reinterpreted, barriers are being removed and the application of space is more pragmatic.
  • What are your thoughts on how the home of the future will do the laundry, cook and store food and as well the dishes?

A jury will select 3 winning entries that will receive cash prize awards.
