WAN Awards - Residential

Submission deadline: 31 December 2010
Winner announced: 15 February 2011

About the awards
The WAN AWARDS Residential Sector is a major international competition, and the final or the 6 bi-monthly WAN 'Excellence in Design' series for 2010. The residential sector incorporates the 5th annual WAN House of the Year Award, but also includes a category for larger housing projects. As such, the Residential Sector consists of two separate awards:

1. WAN Residential Award 2010 (Multi-occupancy housing)
2. WAN House of the Year 2010 (Single-family houses)

Eligibility

WAN Residential Award 2010
If you have designed a residential project, whether an apartment block, housing estate or other multi-occupancy units*, including refurbishment and conversions, that has been completed during the last three full calendar years, (on or after January 1st 2007), you can now enter for the WAN Residential Award 2010.

(*must consist of a minimum of 10 units. Housing schemes with less than 10 units may submit a single unit for the single-family category below)

WAN House of the Year 2010
If you have designed a single-family house that has been completed during this calendar year only, you can now enter for WAN House of the Year 2010.

Please note there is no 'Unbuilt' category for this sector.

Celebrating Architecture Sustainably
Competitions and awards have always been an intrinsic element of winning new work for architects, but now, under the present economic cloud, it has become ever more important. The value of an award is determined not only by the quality of the jury panel but also by the number and calibre of participants.

Using the exclusive WAN database and contacts around the world, WAN acclaims to be able to pull together an unprecedented fusion of high quality architecture and internationally acclaimed judges drawn from both top architectural practices and experts from each sector.

WAN has driven architectural news into the 21st century and now with these awards, WAN is seeking to break the traditional mould of an annual award with a lavish dinner at the end. Whilst this format can work well at a national level, it is unpractical and unsustainable on a global scale. Taking a fresh approach, the WAN Awards are run on bi-monthly rolling programme by sector and published around the world to WAN's global network, providing the highest exposure for the participants with the smallest carbon footprint test.

Judging criteria
The jury will assess entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, use of colour, form & special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weighting:

  • How your design addressed the key elements of the client brief or overcame particular challenges.
  • Examples of how your building has: evolved its specific building type and /or used design and or materials to enhance its integration with its context and / or community.

Please email submissions and direct any questions or problems regarding entries / registration to james.forryan@wantoday.com.

Starting with the Healthcare Award 2010, the WAN awards programme is operated in conjunction with the UIA.
