Australia's foremost timber design and architectural awards2011 Australian Timber Design Awards![]() 2011 Overall Winner_
The winners of the 2011 Australian Timber Design Awards have been announced on October 18 at Chapter House, Melbourne. Major figures from the design community were on hand to enjoy what has become the premier event in the timber design calendar. The main winner is Circa Morris-Nunn Walker for Saffire a lavish 20 suite resort overlooking Great Oyster Bay, Tasmania. ![]() 2011 Overall Winner - Circa Morris-Nunn Walker - Saffire The judging panel was wowed by the manner in which the Saffire resort responds to its bushland surroundings. The organic curves of the resort roofs rise gradually above the bush like small hills, reminiscent of the gentle peaks of the nearby Hazard Ranges. These complex curves could not have been achieved without the design flexibility of pre-fabricated structural timber – a fact that ultimately gave Saffire the edge over other timber-rich finalists. Saffire also features stunning context sensitive visual use of timber. Finely finished timber interiors and rough sawn batten screens and boardings reflect the textures and palettes of the surrounding vegetation. And the curves of the wide-span timber ceilings clearly reference the rolling hills outside the resort windows. Saffire is noteworthy, moreover, for the young age of its design team and for the effective interior design collaboration between Circa Morris-Nunn Walker and Chada.
