Wilhelm Klauditz LectureWood in American LifeDate: 18 October 2011, 11.00 Uhr
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Frederick A. Kamke, Some people might say that America was founded on wood. Timber was an abundant resource when the first settlers arrived – fulfilling needs for shelter, cooking, heating, and transportation. As the new Americans moved west, farms, railroads, and towns consumed timber and replaced forest land with little or no regard for forest regeneration. However, over the last century American forests have been reborn. American forest lands are sustainably managed for timber, water, recreation, and wildlife. Wood products continue to be critical to the American economy. ![]() Although the recent economic recession has severely impacted the wood products industry, the future for wood in American life is certain. In this presentation Professor Kamke will highlight a few historical events that have shaped the wood products industry, including important product innovations. He will also offer some personal insight in regard to future challenges and opportunities in the USA – and perhaps globally. Wood – an old material resource, often taken for granted, sometimes ridiculed, is still a valuable resource for old and new applications.
