International Bauhaus Summer School - Apply Now!

Energy Landscapes 3.0

How will energy production develop in the 21st century?
How do new networks transform geographical and social landscapes?

Dates: 22-31 July 2011
Venue: Bauhaus Dessau,

The objective of the summer school “Energy Landscapes 3.0” is to analyse potential network geographies and concepts in the post-fossil fuel era and their impacts on settlement structures in Europe. We will thereby explicitly refer to a chronicle of utopian thought on a large scale – visionary ideas for new Energy Landscapes promulgated decades ago by Herman Sörgel in 1928 with Atlantropa and Richard Buckminster Fuller in 1972 with World Game. The findings of these analyses should result in a development project for the design of new, “ideal” Energy Landscapes from the perspective of landscape architecture and urban development.

The interdisciplinary summer school is open for all students and post-graduate students of architecture, spatial planning, urban planning, art, design, environmental technology, the environmental sciences, the social sciences, philosophy etc.

Up to five Design studios with outstanding international experts will examine issues concerning the geographies that will evolve in the age of post-fossil energy production and the impact local projects such as Desertec will have on local settlement structures. The design studios will be led by Charles Waldheim (Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts), Stefan Tischer (Univeristà die
Sassari, Alghero), Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia), Theo Deutinger (architect, Rotterdam), and Gunnar Hartmann (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Dessau-Roßlau). The project will be scientifically accompanied by the Federal Environmental Agency and other experts. The results will be presented within the scope of the project “Über Lebenskunst” at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the Cultures of the World).

Students from a wide variety of fields can apply to attend the International Bauhaus Summer School. An application form can be accessed at http://www.bauhaus-dessau.de/index.php?Application-2
