International student competition

Solar Decathlon Europe 2010

Date: 18 - 27 June 2010
Location: Madrid, Spain

After a detailed selection process, the Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 Organization has selected 20 renowned universities from Europe, America and Asia to participate in the competition, which will be held in Madrid, Spain, from 18 to 27 June 2010.

The competition is organized by the Ministry of Housing, Spain, in collaboration with Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the support of the U.S. Department of Energy. 19 university teams from 9 countries in 3 different continents will participate in this competition designing and building real, comfortable and energetically self-sufficient houses that run only on solar energy. These houses will be assembled and displayed for the public at "Villa Solar", in the Madrid Río area, between the Royal Palace and the Manzanares river, and will have an area of 30,000 m2.

As with the original event - Solar Decathlon America -, the Solar Decathlon Europe competition is an international competition among universities around the world with the goal of advancing the knowledge and dissemination of industrialized, solar and sustainable housing.

General Information about the Competition
To compete, the teams must design, build and operate an energy-efficient homes that are powered exclusively by the sun. The competition awards the most energy-efficient, sustainable, and comfortable house.

Just like the well-known Olympic Decathlon, the Solar Decathlon Europe consists of 10 contests that simulate the way in which we use energy in our daily lifes.

The ten contests are:

1. Architecture
2. Engineering and Construction
3. Solar Systems and Hot Water
4. Energy Balance
5. Comfort Conditions
6. Appliances and Functionality
7. Communication and Social Awareness
8. Industrialization and Market Viability
9. Innovation
10. Sustainability
